What Does Our HPB Oncology Department Do?

The Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Oncology (HPB) Department is a highly specialized branch dedicated to treating complex cancers of the liver, pancreas, bile ducts, and gallbladder. As these malignancies are among the most technically challenging to treat, our program has high-volume surgical expertise in procedures like the Whipple and Liver Resections. We ensure precision by integrating specialized surgical procedures, interventional therapies (Ablation, Embolization), and systemic medicine, providing patients with a true multidisciplinary care pathway guided by International standards.

The Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) system involves vital organs that control digestion and detoxification. Cancers in this area are deeply located and surrounded by intricate networks of blood vessels and ducts, demanding expertise found only at specialized centers.

Our Core Scope and Approach:

Specialized Focus:

We exclusively focus on primary and metastatic cancers affecting the liver (Hepatocellular Carcinoma, HCC), the pancreas (Adenocarcinoma), the bile ducts (Cholangiocarcinoma), and the gallbladder.

Multidisciplinary Precision:

Every patient's case is reviewed in our HPB Tumor Board by dedicated Surgical Oncologists, Interventional Radiologists, Medical Oncologists, and Gastroenterologists. This rigorous review ensures the treatment sequence—whether starting with surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation—is optimized for the best possible outcome.

High-Volume Expertise:

Complex procedures like the Whipple procedure and major liver resections require specialized skill. Clinical guidelines recommend these operations be performed at high-volume centers like ours, which consistently correlates with lower complication rates and improved long-term survival.

Comprehensive Services: Complex Surgery and Precision Interventions

Our services integrate the full spectrum of advanced techniques necessary to manage these technically demanding diseases.

Whipple Procedure (Pancreaticoduodenectomy)

An advanced surgical intervention aimed at curative treatment to remove tumors located in the head of the pancreas, the duodenum, the gallbladder, and part of the bile duct. Our surgeons routinely perform this procedure using Robotic-Assisted or Laparoscopic Minimally Invasive techniques.

The Most Complex Surgery: This is a major, life-saving surgery for pancreatic cancer.

Complex Liver Resection (Hepatectomy) & Reconstruction

Surgical removal of cancerous sections of the liver. Our expertise includes complex resections for both primary HCC and metastatic colorectal cancer (cancer spread from the colon). We specialize in vascular reconstruction for tumors involving major blood vessels.

Targeted Liver Removal: We precisely remove the cancerous part of the liver, which is unique because the liver can regenerate. If the tumor involves a major vein, our surgeons are trained to safely repair and rebuild those critical blood vessels—making previously inoperable cases treatable.

Loco-Regional Interventional Therapy

Uses image guidance for procedures like Radiofrequency/Microwave Ablation (RFA/MWA) to destroy small tumors with heat. Also includes TACE (Chemotherapy Embolization) and Y-90 Radioembolization (SIRT) to deliver therapy directly to liver tumors via the bloodstream.

Internal Targeting: Our specialists can deliver treatments directly inside the tumor without major surgery. We can burn small tumors with heat (ablation) or inject tiny beads carrying chemotherapy or radiation (embolization) to target the tumor while protecting the rest of your body.

Multimodal Systemic Therapy

Utilizes the latest Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy protocols alongside chemotherapy. We often use these agents before surgery (neoadjuvant) to shrink tumors (downstage) and increase the chance of a successful resection.

Strategic Combination: We use the latest precision medications to shrink the tumor before surgery, often making an operation possible. Our personalized approach adheres to International standards to ensure your cancer is treated systemically as well as locally.

Why Choose Our Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Oncology Department?

A. High-Level Technical and Surgical Excellence

Vascular Expertise

We are one of the few centers trained to safely perform major tumor resections requiring blood vessel reconstruction (e.g., Portal Vein or Hepatic Artery), offering hope to patients deemed unresectable elsewhere.

Advanced Technology and MIS

We routinely use the Da Vinci Robotic System for complex HPB procedures, providing enhanced visualization and control that translates into smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, and shorter hospital stays.

Liver Transplantation Access

For selected patients with early-stage HCC who have underlying liver disease (cirrhosis), we offer evaluation for Liver Transplantation, a potentially curative option unavailable at most centers.

B. Integrated Diagnostic and Supportive Care

Advanced Endoscopic Diagnostics

Our interventional gastroenterology team provides specialized procedures like EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound) and ERCP, essential for accurate diagnosis, staging, and placing stents to relieve jaundice before treatment can begin.

Pre-Habilitation and Recovery

We implement specialized protocols, including Portal Vein Embolization (PVE) to safely grow the remnant liver before major surgery, and comprehensive rehabilitation plans to ensure optimal patient recovery from the demanding nature of HPB procedures.
