Department of Clinical Biochemistry

The Clinical Biochemistry Department is the analytical core of the hospital using biochemical measurement to support the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and monitoring of disease. Measurements are made in blood, urine, CSF and body fluids.

Biochemical measurements can assist in determining the function of the kidneys, liver, heart, thyroid and other endocrine organs as well as assessing cardiovascular risk by measuring lipids, or diagnosing and monitoring diabetes. Increasingly, Clinical Biochemistry tests are also used as a means of determining which patients would benefit from and, just as importantly would not, from more invasive procedures and/or expensive therapies.

In Oncology, our role is to measure specific substances called tumor markers in the blood and body fluids that help the clinical team in patient management throughout the patients entire cancer journey.

Our NABL accredited round the clock Clinical Biochemistry laboratory provides biochemical testing to the highest standards making extensive use of information technology and robotics using highly sophisticated automated analysers.

Core Scope and Mission

Scope of Clinical Biochemistry

The scope of Clinical Biochemistry is vast, encompassing the use of biochemical analyses to diagnose, treat and monitor disease.

Diagnosis and Monitoring

Analysing body fluids to diagnose and monitor a wide range of conditions including liver, kidney, heart and metabolic disorders.

Treatment Support

Determining which patients would benefit from specific therapies thereby guiding treatment choices.

Monitoring Patient Safety

Tracking organ function (kidney, liver) to ensure that patients can safely tolerate complex treatment like chemotherapy and targeted therapy.

Prognosis

Periodic measurement of specific tumor markers during treatment to help monitor treatment effectiveness and detect early recurrence.

Specialised Testing

Performing tumor marker assays, substances produced by tumors or the body in response to cancers to detect presence, recurrence or spread.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to provide state-of-art diagnostic service to our patients to leverage the study of chemical processes in the body to diagnose, monitor and treat cancer. This involves analyzing body fluids to identify biochemical changes associated with cancer, guiding patient care and advancing research into newer therapies.

Services & Technology

Comprehensive biochemical testing services for precision cancer care

Organ Function and Metabolic Panels

Laboratory testing that analyses routine chemistry parameters using fully automated analysers. This panel gives a baseline of patients values and ensures that organs like the liver and kidneys essential for drug metabolism are functioning adequately prior to treatment.

Blood glucose levels are crucial in cancer care. High levels increase treatment side effects like infection risk, delayed healing, chemoresistance and worse survival. Low blood sugar also poses risks. Baseline glucose checks and HbA1c are important especially for known diabetic patients, those on steroids or other risk factors.

Electrolyte disturbances are very common complications in cancer patients. They mainly concern changes in serum sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium levels. These changes are caused due to tumor and the treatments given. Cancer patients frequently develop electrolyte abnormalities like low sodium (hyponatremia), low/high potassium, low phosphorus and high/low calcium due to tumor effects or cancer treatment requiring prompt monitoring and management to prevent severe or life threatening complications.

Normal liver and kidney function is crucial to process the chemotherapy drugs. Liver and kidney function are monitored before every cycle of chemotherapy.

Cancer patients frequently develop electrolyte abnormalitiesl like low sodium( hyponatremia ), low/ high potassium, low phosphorus and high / low calcium due to tumor effects or cancer treatment requiring prompt monitoring and management to prevent severe or life threatening complications.

A comprehensive cancer centre has to manage both cancer and metabolic issues.

Tumor Markers

Quantitative evaluation of substances (often proteins like PSA, CA15.3, CA19.9, CA125, CEA, AFP etc) made by cancer cells or the body in response to cancer.

  • DIAGNOSIS: Help confirm cancer, often with other tests
  • PROGNOSIS: Indicate how aggressive a cancer will behave
  • TREATMENT PLANNING: Guides choices, like predicting drug response
  • MONITORING: Show if the treatment is working or if there is a disease recurrence

Specialised Investigations

Includes hormone assays, serum chromogranin (for neuroendocrine tumors), Serum protein electrophoresis and immunofixation (for multiple myelomas) across multiple technology platforms.

Essential to confirm the diagnosis and track response to treatment.
